The 2023 Homeless Count

The Los Angeles Homeless Count (conducted by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority in collaboration with volunteers from across the region) is conducted annually to provide an estimate of the number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the city and to identify trends and patterns in homelessness over time.

On January 26, Imagine LA staff, families, and supporters came together to volunteer in the 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count.

Before volunteering, we gathered and bonded at our partner Pathways LA’s office near the volunteer site over a meal and program. We feasted on pizza, got to know our fellow volunteers, and were inspired by our incredible Family Ambassador Faith’s story of resilience and courage.

Faith told volunteers her firsthand account of the impact of mentors – how her mentors helped her find her career and support her infant son.

“The work has to be done together.”

We then split into small groups and were assigned regions to drive and walk through.

Whenever we saw an individual within that region that looked to be experiencing homelessness, we made a note on a physical map, as well as a digital map on the official Homeless Count app.

According to the 2021 Los Angeles Homeless Count, there are an estimated 66,436 individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County on any given night. This represents a 12.7% increase from the previous count in 2020.

The count is an essential tool for policymakers, service providers, and advocates who work to address homelessness in Los Angeles. The results of this year’s count will be available in the spring.
