Mentee of the Month - March 2021

We are thrilled to celebrate Carla Luis as Imagine LA’s March 2021 Mentee of the Month!

Since joining Imagine LA's program in February 2018, Carla and her daughter (age 10) have shown extraordinary resilience and initiative in the face of the pandemic. They have created opportunity in the face of adversity.

Carla’s goal since the start of her time with Imagine LA has been to find employment. Having a daughter on the autism spectrum, Carla has struggled to find a job that provides the flexibility she needs.

A lack of consistent transportation has made it difficult to find opportunities that work within her schedule. Carla saw the unique opportunity during the pandemic to take advantage of some of Imagine LA’s programs that are now remote.

She took the step to join our web development training, Codetalk, becoming one of the first people to sign up. Carla is an active and engagement participant, demonstrating leadership and an eagerness to learn. She hopes to use her new skills to help build a new career.

Taking the step to learn how to code, and overcoming years of anxiety over her employment, is an admirable feat. Carla’s courage to change careers, especially an industry that often lacks representation that reflects her background and identity, is inspiring. “Carla seems more motivated, determined, and sure of herself!” says her Family Team Manager, Lorie Nguyen.

Despite being stuck at home with limited social interaction, Carla’s daughter’s communication skills and independence have blossomed over the past year as well. While the course of the pandemic has been difficult for everyone, it also has provided space to reflect and grow. We are so proud of Carla and her family, and we can’t wait to see what amazing things they accomplish in the future!

Congratulations Carla and thank you for your commitment during these difficult times!
